How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

LaGuardia asks freshmen educated outside the US for a copy of the high school diploma and English translations of all documents, accepting official translations or scanned copies, and it does not say who must translate.

LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

Transfer students may also need a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member or from CUNY before credit is awarded, and that evaluation is something we do not provide.

Worth knowing about LaGuardia

Scans accepted

Freshmen may email scanned documents.

7-10 days

Typical NACES evaluation time for transfer credit.

From the university

Foreign university records must be sent by the school.

LaGuardia requirements in detail

Translation (freshmen)

English translations of all documents with a copy of the high school diploma; official translations or scanned copies accepted (Apply: documents to submit).

Who may translate

LaGuardia does not say. CUNY's guidelines accept a translation agency, consulate or school, not you or your family (CUNY Document Translation Guidelines (PDF)).

Transfer credit

May require an evaluation: a course-by-course report from any NACES member, usually within 7-10 days, or CUNY's own review, which can take weeks or months (Apply: documents to submit).

University records

Must be official: the university mails them or emails them directly to LaGuardia Admissions (Apply: documents to submit).

Non-degree students

Proof of high school graduation with the diploma translated into English, even with a college degree; non-English transcripts need an official translation and an evaluation from a CUNY-approved agency (Non-degree students).

Where to send

Freshmen mail documents or scan and email them to Admissions@lagcc.cuny.edu (Apply: documents to submit).

Freshmen: translations by email are fine

LaGuardia keeps the freshman rule short.

Students who attended high school outside the US send a copy of the diploma, the $65 application fee and English translations of all documents, and LaGuardia accepts official translations or scanned copies (Apply: documents to submit).

You can mail them or scan and email them to Admissions@lagcc.cuny.edu; mail can take days or weeks, so email is faster. Admissions tells you if more documents are needed.

When CUNY's central office evaluates records for its colleges, its Document Translation Guidelines apply: complete and literal, in the same format as the original, on letterhead and signed by the translator (CUNY Document Translation Guidelines (PDF)).

An eVerbary certified translation follows that format. More on CUNY's rules is on the CUNY page.

Transfers: official records and an evaluation for credit

For university records LaGuardia is stricter: every university document from outside the US must be official, which means the university sends it directly to LaGuardia by mail or email (Apply: documents to submit).

Before awarding transfer credit, LaGuardia may need the credentials evaluated.

You can order a course-by-course evaluation from any NACES member, usually ready within 7-10 days once the agency has everything, or send the official transcripts and translations to CUNY, which is free but may take several weeks and sometimes months.

Non-degree applicants have their own rule: the high school diploma must be translated into English even if you hold a college degree, and non-English transcripts need an official English translation plus an evaluation from an agency on CUNY's approved list (non-degree students).

Need a certified translation for LaGuardia?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • High school diploma
  • High school transcripts and national exam certificates
  • University transcripts, for transfer credit
  • Degree certificates

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to LaGuardia

  • Freshmen email the translations with scanned documents to Admissions@lagcc.cuny.edu or mail them (Apply: documents to submit). We send a signed PDF you can attach directly, and can email it to the admissions office on request.

  • For transfer credit through a NACES agency, the translation goes to the agency with your records; the agency sends the evaluation.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For LaGuardia that means we translate your diploma and records; the NACES or CUNY evaluation needed for transfer credit is separate, and foreign university records must still be sent by the university itself.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does LaGuardia accept a scanned translation?

Yes. For freshmen with documents from outside the US, LaGuardia accepts official translations or scanned copies (Apply: documents to submit).

Who can translate my documents for LaGuardia?

LaGuardia does not say; CUNY's guidelines accept a translation agency and exclude you and your family (CUNY Document Translation Guidelines (PDF)).

Do I need an evaluation to transfer credit from abroad?

You may. LaGuardia suggests a course-by-course evaluation from any NACES member, usually 7-10 days, or CUNY's slower review (Apply: documents to submit).

I have a college degree. Do I still translate my high school diploma?

For non-degree study, yes: the diploma must be translated into English regardless of a higher degree (Non-degree students).

Can I send my foreign university transcript myself?

No. University documents from outside the US must be sent by the university to LaGuardia (Apply: documents to submit).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
