How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

John Carroll University says many students with high school or college records from outside the US must have them evaluated by a third-party service, with a general assessment and a cumulative GPA, plus course analysis for college transcripts; it recommends The Evaluation Company and also accepts WES, ECE and GCE, and your StartJCU portal tells you whether you need one.

John Carroll's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, and for TEC or GCE eVerbary provides an ATA-certified translator on request. The evaluation is something we do not produce.

John Carroll requirements in detail

Translation

No rule of its own; foreign records are read through the evaluation (International students).

Who may translate

Set by the evaluation agency; see below.

Evaluation

Required for many applicants with records from outside the US: general assessment and cumulative GPA; course analysis for college transcripts (International students).

Agencies

The Evaluation Company (recommended, $170 through JCU's application), WES, ECE and GCE (International students).

Is it required for you?

Your StartJCU portal shows whether an evaluation is required after you apply (International students).

Deadlines

April 15 for fall, September 15 for spring (International students).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not translate. ECE accepts any complete, literal translation, including your own, or translates internally for an $85 waiver.

JCU's recommended The Evaluation Company requires an outside translator certified by ATA, or translates in-house, and GCE accepts translations from the issuing university, the Ministry of Education or an ATA-certified translator.

For TEC or GCE, ask eVerbary for a free quote for an ATA-certified translator and name the agency.

Apply first, then see if you need it

John Carroll says "many" students with foreign records need the evaluation, not all, and tells you to check your StartJCU portal after applying (International students).

If it is required, the report must include a general assessment and a cumulative GPA for all international transcripts, and a course analysis for college and university work.

The TEC discount is the cheapest path JCU names, but because TEC wants an ATA-certified translator, compare the full cost with WES or ECE before you choose.

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to John Carroll

  • The translation goes to the evaluation agency with your records; the agency sends the evaluation to John Carroll. Your school's grading scale goes with the Common App School Report or counselor recommendation (International students).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for John Carroll, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For John Carroll that means we translate your records; the evaluation is ordered by you from TEC, WES, ECE or GCE.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
