Brookdale Community College asks international applicants for high school and college transcripts accompanied by official English translations, and does not say who must translate.

Brookdale at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

Brookdale's international admission page says academic records must be accompanied by official English translations and does not restrict who makes them (prospective international students); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Brookdale requirements in detail

Translation

Transcripts from high school, college or university must be accompanied by official English translations (Prospective international students).

Who may translate

Not stated; Brookdale names one translation company as a source but does not require it (Prospective international students).

What the records must show

Courses taken, grades and/or examination results (Prospective international students).

Evaluation

Only for transfer credit from a university abroad: a course-by-course evaluation by an approved agency, from the NACES member list; TEC or WES recommended (Prospective international students).

Where to upload

All supplemental documents can be uploaded to your application portal; $80 application fee (Prospective international students).

Terms and timing

F-1: fall and spring, apply about six months ahead. Other international students: fall, spring or summer, at least two weeks ahead (Prospective international students).

One translation rule for every academic record

Brookdale lists the same supplemental documents for all international applicants: transcripts from high school and from any college or university, showing the courses, grades and examination results, and accompanied by official English translations (Prospective international students).

The rule is not limited to F-1 students, so residents and other visa holders applying with records from abroad translate them too.

Translate the exam certificates and the grading key along with the transcript, since Brookdale reads the results as well as the courses.

The documents are uploaded to your application portal, so a PDF of the certified translation next to a scan of the original is what you need.

Brookdale mentions one translation company as a source of translations, but its rule only asks for official English translations; it does not require any particular provider.

Credit from abroad: the evaluator Brookdale recommends has its own rule

If you want credit for university study in your home country, your transcript must be evaluated course by course by an approved agency, and the official copy of the evaluation must be sent to Brookdale (transfer page).

The full list of accepted agencies is the NACES member list (NACES). Brookdale says most students use The Evaluation Company, which offers a discount through Brookdale's link, or World Education Services.

The two recommended agencies treat translations differently. WES accepts a translation from a professional translation service (WES).

The Evaluation Company accepts an outside translation only from a translator certified by ATA, or translates in house (TEC).

If you choose TEC, ask eVerbary for a free quote and say it is for TEC, and we assign an ATA-certified translator for the languages ATA certifies.

English proficiency without a test

Brookdale gives applicants whose native language is not English several ways to show proficiency: a short video chat with the ESL Administrator, a transcript showing coursework completed in English, SAT or ACT results, or an English proficiency test.

Most international students still take an English placement test after arrival (Prospective international students).

If you use a transcript to show English-medium study and it is not in English, it needs the same official translation.

  • University transcripts, for the course-by-course evaluation
  • Bank statement issued within the last three months, if not in English

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to Brookdale

  • Upload the transcripts and their official English translations to your Brookdale application portal (Prospective international students). Questions go to the International Education Center at international@brookdalecc.edu.

  • For transfer credit, the translation goes to the evaluation agency with your transcript, and the agency sends the official evaluation to Brookdale (Transfer students: international students).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Brookdale that means we translate your records; the course-by-course evaluation needed for credit from abroad is ordered by you from a NACES member.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Brookdale need my high school diploma translated?

Yes. High school, college and university records must be accompanied by official English translations (Prospective international students).

Do I have to use the translation company Brookdale mentions?

No. Brookdale names one as a source of translations, but its rule only asks for official English translations (Prospective international students).

Do I need a credential evaluation to apply?

Only for transfer credit from a university abroad, and it must be course by course (Transfer students: international students).

Can I use an eVerbary translation with The Evaluation Company?

TEC accepts outside translations only from an ATA-certified translator (TEC). eVerbary provides one on request through a free quote for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) or Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page).

When should an F-1 applicant apply?

Brookdale admits F-1 students for fall and spring and recommends starting about six months before the semester (Prospective international students).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
