Issued by the civil registry (ZAGS) of the Ministry of Justice

Births in Tajikistan are registered by the district civil registry office, still called ZAGS after its Soviet predecessor, which has been part of the Ministry of Justice since 2012. Registration within three months of the birth has been free since 2019, and a replacement copy is ordered from the same office or, from abroad, through a Tajik consulate.

Certificates are in Tajik, written in Cyrillic, often with Russian alongside; anything issued before 1991 is generally in Russian only. Both are translated in full, including the record number and the registering office. See our Tajik page and our Russian page.

Surnames that change between generations

Since April 2016 a ZAGS office may not register a newborn with a Russian surname ending such as -ov or -ova, or a patronymic in -ovich or -ovna. A father born as Karimov can therefore have a child registered as Karimzoda or Karimi. Existing certificates were not changed, so the parent keeps the old form.

An officer comparing a family's certificates sees two surnames. The translation reproduces each exactly as printed and, if you ask, adds a translator's note that the difference follows the 2016 rule. For a parent who changed their own surname later, see our name change page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

My child's surname is different from mine. Is that a problem?

It is what the 2016 rule produces for children born since then. We reproduce both names exactly and can add a note explaining the rule.

Can a Tajik birth certificate be apostilled?

Yes. The Ministry of Justice apostilles civil registry documents. USCIS does not need an apostille; a court or state agency may, so ask the office.

My certificate is a Soviet one in Russian.

Normal for births before 1991, and it remains valid. We translate it as issued, naming the Soviet-era office as printed.
