A ZAGS registration, not the nikoh
In Tajikistan a marriage exists in law only once it is registered at a civil registry (ZAGS) office of the Ministry of Justice, and the marriage certificate is what that office issues. Many couples also have a religious nikoh performed by a mullah, often before the registration. The nikoh has no civil effect and does not produce a marriage certificate.
If your file holds both, we translate both, and each is described as what it is. A nikoh paper is not translated as a marriage certificate. For a marriage-based petition see our marriage green card page.
Age, medical check and names on the certificate
The minimum marriage age has been 18 since 2010, and a court may lower it by one year. Since 2016 couples must also undergo a premarital medical examination before the registry will register the marriage. Neither of those papers appears on the certificate itself, which records the spouses, their dates and places of birth, the surnames chosen after the marriage and the record number.
The certificate is in Tajik Cyrillic and often carries Russian too; older ones are in Russian. Surnames are reproduced as written, so a wife who took her husband's name may appear in a Russian or a Tajik form. See our Tajik page, and our divorce certificate page if the marriage was later dissolved.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
We only had a nikoh. Can you translate it as a marriage certificate?
No. We translate it accurately as a religious marriage document. Whether it serves your purpose is a question for the receiving office or your attorney.
The office wants proof I was single before the marriage.
The civil registry issues a certificate of no registered marriage. It is a separate document, and we translate it too.
Who apostilles a Tajik marriage certificate?
The Ministry of Justice. USCIS does not require an apostille, but a court or state agency might.
