A court order, not a certificate

South Africa has no divorce certificate as such. A marriage is ended by a decree of divorce, a court order granted under the Divorce Act of 1979 by a High Court or, since 9 August 2010, by a Regional Court. Copies come from the registrar or clerk of the court that granted it. Where the spouses settled, the settlement agreement is usually attached and made an order of court, and it is part of what you translate.

Decrees from the last decades are generally in English and need no translation. Older ones, from courts that worked in Afrikaans, may be in Afrikaans or bilingual, and so may the settlement agreements attached to them; those are translated in full. See our Afrikaans page.

What a US office reads in it

USCIS and US courts look for the court, the case number, both names, the date of the order and the court's stamp, to confirm the marriage really ended before a new one. We reproduce the case number exactly and translate every stamp. The marriage itself is proved by the marriage certificate.

Customary marriages are also ended by a court decree, not by the families alone. If you lived apart without divorcing, see our legal separation page; South African courts have not granted judicial separations since 1979.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a South African divorce certificate?

No. The document is the decree of divorce issued by the court. Ask the registrar or clerk of that court for a certified copy.

My decree is in English, but the settlement is in Afrikaans.

Then the settlement agreement needs translating. It is attached to the order and is part of it, so offices usually want both in English.

We had a customary marriage. How was it ended?

Customary marriages are dissolved by a court decree under the Divorce Act, like civil marriages. We translate the decree in the same way.
