Injitwo, and the family relation register
Korean acknowledgment is 인지 (injI), reported to the registration office and recorded in the 가족관계등록부, the family relation register that replaced the abolished hoju system in 2008.
It may also be made by will, and a court may declare paternity where the father does not acknowledge. The certificate that shows it is the family relation certificate, and past entries need the detailed version.
The husband is presumed the father, and the clock runs
A child born to a married woman is presumed to be the husband's, and rebutting that presumption requires a denial-of-paternity suit brought within a short statutory period of learning the facts.
Once the period runs, the presumption stands regardless of biology. So a Korean file may show a legal father who is not the biological one, and that is the law rather than an error. We translate the record as it stands.
The surname, and the family court
Acknowledgment does not by itself change the child's surname. A change requires an application to the family court, which considers the child's welfare, followed by a report to the registration office.
So a child may be acknowledged and still carry the mother's surname, and a US reader expecting the change to follow automatically will find it did not.
Romanisation, and the RRN
Korean personal names are exempt from Revised Romanisation and families spell as they please, so a spelling difference between a Korean record and a US one is usually not a discrepancy.
