The father's name is part of the child's name
An Eritrean child takes the father's given name as a second name and the paternal grandfather's as a third, so paternity shows on every document the child holds. Children born outside marriage usually carry their father's names too. If the mother cannot or will not name the father, the child is given the name of her father or of her husband, depending on whom she lives with.
A birth certificate naming the father is usually the main proof. Where the birth was registered late, other papers come in: in Asmara, several sources say a birth not registered within 90 days needs a court confirmation of parenthood based on witness statements. That decision is translated in full.
Court decisions and supporting papers
Disputed paternity is a matter for the courts; for Muslims, family matters go to the Sharia courts, which also issue custody certificates. DNA results, where they exist, are expert evidence; see our expert report page.
We translate names exactly in the order printed so a US office can follow the father-to-child link to the Eritrean birth certificate. See our Tigrinya and Arabic pages.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My second name is not my father's name.
That happens when the father was not named: the mother's father's or husband's name is used. The translation keeps the names as printed.
Is my birth certificate enough to prove paternity?
The receiving office decides. Ask it whether it wants more; we translate any court decision you have.
I have a court confirmation of parenthood.
It is translated in full, with the court's name, file number and stamps.
