Chile had no divorce at all until 2004
This matters for older files. Divorce became legally available in Chile only with Ley 19.947, published in May 2004. Before that a marriage could be ended in practice only by nulidad — an annulment declaring the marriage never validly existed, often on a jurisdictional technicality. Chilean files therefore contain annulment rulings where a US reader expects a divorce, and they are not the same thing: one says the marriage ended, the other says it never was.
We translate each as the instrument it is, without recasting an annulment as a divorce.
The marginal entry (subinscripción) is what makes it count
A Chilean divorce judgment does not do its work on its own. The final judgment must be subinscribed in the margin of the marriage entry, and only once that is done is the divorce effective against third parties and the spouses acquire the civil status of divorced and may remarry.
So the document that proves a marriage ended in Chile is usually a Registro Civil marriage certificate showing the subinscripción, not the judgment alone. If you hold only the judgment, check whether the subinscripción was done before you file anything.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the judgment or the marriage certificate with the annotation?
Ask the office receiving it. The annotation proves the marriage ended; only the judgment or resolution carries the terms. Some filings want both and they are not interchangeable.
Is the date it became final translated?
Yes, and it is usually the date that matters. A decision and the date it became enforceable can be different days, and both are reproduced as the document gives them.
My document runs to many pages.
We translate all of them, at $24.95 per page with no word cap. Send it through the quote form if you want the figure before ordering.
