Names without surnames, and honorifics
Burmese names have no family name. A name is a sequence of syllables belonging to that person alone, not shared with a spouse, parents or siblings — so a married couple's documents show two names with nothing in common, and a US form expecting a shared surname has nowhere to put anything.
Burmese names also carry honorifics that are not part of the name: U and Daw for older men and women, Ko and Ma for younger. A translation that folds "Daw" into a given name creates a name the person does not have. We reproduce the name as written and identify the honorific as one.
Script, and the household list
Burmese is written in its own script, and marriage documents commonly travel with a household registration list establishing who lives together — which is frequently what actually demonstrates the relationship an office is asking about, rather than a certificate alone.
