How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The New Hampshire DMV asks applicants with a home-country license to bring that license and a driving record from their country, and says a notarized translation is required if they are not in English; it does not say who must translate.

A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary, with our notarization added, meets it. The DMV states that an International Driving Permit does not satisfy this requirement.

New Hampshire DMV at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

The DMV requires a notarized translation of a home-country license and driving record not in English and does not restrict who makes it (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary, notarized, meets it. Worth knowing about New Hampshire DMV

Notarized translation

Required for a home-country license and record not in English.

No IDP substitute

An International Driving Permit does not meet the rule.

Full test

Foreign licenses other than Canada or France do not transfer.

New Hampshire DMV requirements in detail

Translation

A notarized translation is required if the home-country license, driving record or substitute letter is not in English (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Who may translate

Not restricted on the DMV's page; the translation must be notarized (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Notarization

Required. eVerbary adds notarization for $34.90 per order (DMV rule).

International Driving Permit

Not acceptable for this requirement (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Driving record

A copy of your driving record or history from your home country; if you cannot get an official record, a police, criminal or insurance letter showing the license is not suspended (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Foreign license

Licenses from another US state, Canada or France transfer without testing if valid or expired less than a year; any other foreign license means a full vision, knowledge and road examination (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Who may apply

Visitors on tourist (B1, B2) or fiancé (K1, K2) visas are not eligible for a license or ID; work and student visa holders apply by appointment at the Concord office (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

What the notarized translation covers

The rule sits in the DMV's section for non-US citizens temporarily residing in New Hampshire on a work or student visa.

Applicants bring their home-country license and a copy of their driving record or history from that country; if no official record is available, a police, criminal or insurance letter showing that the license is not suspended may be used instead.

If any of those is not in English, the DMV requires a notarized translation, and it adds that an International Driving Permit is not acceptable for this requirement.

The page does not say who must translate, so the requirement is the notarization, not a particular translator. Our certified translation carries a signed statement of accuracy, and notarization can be added to the order. Original documents must be no older than 60 days where that applies.

The test, and who can apply

A foreign license does not exempt you from testing unless it is from Canada or France: everyone else takes the vision, knowledge and road tests.

The knowledge test is offered in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Farsi and American Sign Language; interpreters for other languages are permitted only at the Concord DMV, and they must show identification (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Visa holders must also show their visa documents, an I-94 with at least two months left, and, for J-1 holders, a school or employment letter on letterhead dated within 60 days.

If the visa does not name a spouse, partner or dependent, the DMV may ask for a marriage or birth certificate; the page states no separate translation rule for those (Non-US citizen license and ID requirements).

Submitting the translation to New Hampshire DMV

What we do not do

eVerbary translates documents; it is not the DMV and does not issue licenses, International Driving Permits or REAL ID decisions.

For the New Hampshire DMV that means we translate and notarize your documents; we do not obtain driving records from your home country or provide International Driving Permits.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
