Northeastern University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Northeastern University requires an official English translation of every record not in English, at every level, but who may translate depends on where you apply. Undergraduate Admissions accepts a translation from a school official or from a translation agency accredited in your school's country, which eVerbary, a US company, is not, and Khoury College wants the issuing institution to translate; the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs accept an officially certified translator, and an eVerbary translation fits those programs. On-campus graduate programs run Northeastern's own Foreign Credential Evaluation from your uploads, and for a long list of countries, all of Spanish-speaking Latin America and Brazil included, they want the original-language record next to the translation.

Northeastern University: requirements for documents in another language
What Northeastern asks for
TranslationAn official English translation for any document not in English, first-year, transfer and graduate (international, first-year, graduate FCE).
Who may translate (undergraduate)A school official, or a translation agency accredited in the country of the school (source). Transcripts sent by you, your family or an independent consultant are rejected.
Who may translate (graduate)By college: CSSH and Public Policy accept the institution, an officially certified translator or an evaluation agency (source); Khoury, only the issuing institution (source); the FCE pages and Engineering do not say.
EvaluationFirst-year: none; you self-report courses and grades. Transfer: a course-by-course evaluation from CED, TEC (formerly SpanTran), WES or another recognized agency, after admission, to process credit (source). On-campus graduate: Northeastern's internal FCE.
Original-language documents (graduate)Required with the translation for listed countries; waived only if your institution shows it issues records solely in English, and a medium-of-instruction letter does not count (source, FCE).
Scans (graduate)Full-color uploads of every page, front and back; blurry, partial or altered images are rejected (source). Engineering: PDFs up to 500 KB, with the reverse side and grading legend (source).
TimingFinal high school transcript by June 30 (source); most graduate programs want official records only after admission; College of Professional Studies, within 30 days of the first term (source).
Does it accept eVerbary? It depends on the program. Undergraduate and transfer: no. Northeastern names a school official or a translation agency accredited in the country of your school (international applicants); eVerbary is a US company, not an agency accredited in another country, so ask Undergraduate Admissions or use a translator accredited in your school's country. Khoury College master's: no, the reporting institution must translate (Khoury FAQ). CSSH and Public Policy graduate programs: yes, they accept an officially certified translator (CSSH, Public Policy), so an eVerbary translation fits. The central FCE pages, Engineering and D'Amore-McKim online ask for an official or certified translation without saying who makes it (FCE); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduate: an agency accredited in your school's country

Northeastern's international applicants page says the translation can be issued by a school official or by a translation agency accredited in the country of your school. eVerbary is a US company with translators in the US, so a translation from us does not match that wording; ask your school to issue it, use an agency accredited in your school's country, or ask Undergraduate Admissions what else it will take. The page is also strict about delivery: transcripts must come directly from your school, and national exam results released only to you can be scanned and emailed by a school official from a verifiable address, or sent as a certified copy by mail.

First-year applicants need no evaluation. Transfer applicants do, after admission: a certified course-by-course evaluation from CED, TEC, WES or a similar recognized agency that converts credits and grades and states the institution's accreditation in US terms (transfer applicants). The current-term course list can be an unofficial transcript or a PDF screenshot; college transcripts must be official.

Graduate: the FCE, and the original-language country list

On-campus graduate programs do not ask you to buy an evaluation. Northeastern's Foreign Credential Evaluation team compares your records with a US degree from the full-color scans you upload, front and back, of transcripts and degree certificates; a provisional certificate is valid for one year from completion (FCE documents). For a published list of countries, among them Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Mexico, Spain and Turkey, Northeastern requires the document in the original language and a certified translation (original-language list). Separate country articles cover India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan and others.

College rules sit on top of the FCE. Engineering says an English translation alone is not enough and wants at least six semesters of grades, or four for three-year degrees (source). D'Amore-McKim's online programs take a course-by-course evaluation from SpanTran, WES or ECE, accompanied by a certified translation, as the official transcript, while its campus programs use the FCE (source). The College of Professional Studies wants foreign transcripts mailed by the institution, sealed and stamped, with the English translation inside, or sent through a secure e-transcript service (source).

Where Northeastern's pages differ

Khoury College's master's FAQ says international transcripts must be translated by the reporting institution, not the applicant (Khoury). The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Public Policy accept the institution, an officially certified translator or a credential evaluation agency (CSSH, Public Policy). Both feed the same university-wide FCE, and the central FCE article does not say which rule applies. We have not resolved that difference for you; if you apply to Khoury, ask its admissions office before you order a translation.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Northeastern

Undergraduates apply through the Common App or Coalition and track documents in the Application Status Check; your school sends the transcripts, with the translation from a school official or an accredited agency in your school's country (source).

Graduate applicants upload clear color scans of the original-language records and the translation to the graduate application, for the FCE (source); official transcripts follow after admission, and Khoury warns not to send them before a decision (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At Northeastern that means we translate for graduate programs whose rules we fit; we are not an agency accredited in your school's country for undergraduate records, Khoury wants the issuing institution's translation, and transfer credit evaluations come from CED, TEC or WES.

Frequently asked questions

Can a translation service translate my high school transcript for Northeastern undergraduate admission?

Only an agency accredited in the country of your school, or a school official (source). eVerbary is a US company and does not meet that wording; your school must still send the transcripts itself.

I studied in Mexico, Argentina or Brazil. Can I upload only the English translation for graduate admission?

No. These countries are on the FCE list where both the original-language record and a certified translation are required (source).

Is a letter saying my program was taught in English enough to skip the original-language documents?

No. The FCE article says medium-of-instruction documentation does not show that records are issued only in English (source).

Do I need WES for a Khoury master's in computer science?

No. Khoury says international transcripts need no WES evaluation, but they must be translated by the issuing institution, not by you (source).

I am transferring from a university abroad. Do I need a credential evaluation?

Yes, after admission, to process transfer credit: a course-by-course evaluation from CED, TEC, WES or another recognized agency (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
