Hunter College's graduate admissions ask applicants with non-US records to upload copies of the original transcripts with authorized, complete and exact English translations, and to submit a course-by-course evaluation from one of nine listed services; Hunter does not say who must translate.

Hunter College (CUNY) accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The course-by-course evaluation is something we do not provide; undergraduate applicants follow CUNY's central rules instead.

Hunter requirements in detail

Translation (graduate)

Documents in another language with authorized, complete and exact English translations (Graduate degree application).

Who may translate

Not stated.

What transcripts must show

Copies of the original transcripts, in the native language, with dates of enrollment, courses, credits or hours, marks and class rank if any, plus proof of every degree conferred (Graduate degree application).

Evaluation

Required: course-by-course from ACEI, ECE, Evaluation Service, Foreign Credential Evaluations, IEE, Josef Silny & Associates, Scholaro, SpanTran (TEC) or WES (Graduate degree application).

Evaluation as translation

Hunter says evaluations of academic transcripts can serve as English translations (Graduate degree application).

Exceptions

The Silberman School of Social Work has its own instructions for non-US transcripts (Graduate degree application).

Undergraduate

Through CUNY's central application and its Document Translation Guidelines.

Hunter's graduate rule, line by line

For graduate programs other than Social Work, Hunter wants scanned copies of your original transcripts in the native language showing the dates you enrolled, the subjects, the credits or hours for each, the marks and, where it exists, your rank in the class, together with evidence that every degree, diploma or professional title was conferred (Graduate degree application).

If those documents are not in English they must come with authorized, complete and exact English translations.

"Complete and exact" means the translation keeps every line Hunter lists, including the rank and the credit hours.

Hunter also warns that it may rescind an offer if the uploaded transcript differs from the official one (Graduate degree application), so translate the same document you will later have sent officially.

The evaluation, and when it doubles as a translation

Hunter now also requires a course-by-course evaluation of non-US study from one of nine services, and says an evaluation of academic transcripts can serve as the English translation (Graduate degree application).

Whether that saves you a translation depends on the agency: most of them evaluate from a translation you provide.

WES and ECE accept certified translations from a professional service (WES, ECE); IEE accepts certified translators and sells its own (IEE).

ACEI and Josef Silny & Associates want a translator certified by ATA when the translation is made in the US (ACEI, JS&A); eVerbary can provide an ATA-certified translator on request through a free quote.

Your diplomas and degree certificates still need translating if the evaluation does not reproduce them.

Undergraduates: CUNY decides

First-year and transfer applicants to Hunter apply through CUNY's central application, and their translations follow CUNY's Document Translation Guidelines and its free evaluation option, explained on the CUNY page.

The graduate rule above applies only to Hunter's master's and advanced certificate programs.

Uploading the translation to Hunter

  • Scan and upload the transcripts, degree certificates and their translations in the online graduate application, and have the evaluation service send its course-by-course report to Hunter's Graduate Admissions Office (Graduate degree application).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Hunter that means we translate your transcripts and degrees; the course-by-course evaluation comes from one of Hunter's nine listed services.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of translation does Hunter want for graduate applications?

Authorized, complete and exact English translations (Graduate degree application). Hunter does not say who must make them; a certified professional translation qualifies.

Do I need an evaluation and a translation for Hunter?

You need the course-by-course evaluation; Hunter says the evaluation of transcripts can serve as the English translation (Graduate degree application). Degree certificates and other documents still need translating if the report does not cover them.

Which evaluation services does Hunter accept?

ACEI, ECE, Evaluation Service, Foreign Credential Evaluations, IEE, Josef Silny & Associates, Scholaro, SpanTran (TEC) and WES (Graduate degree application).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for ACEI or Josef Silny?

Yes, on request through a free quote. ATA certifies Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page) into English.

I am applying as an undergraduate. Does this apply?

No. Undergraduate applicants follow CUNY's central rules; see the CUNY page.

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
