Connecticut courts interpret every court matter, so the private work is outside the courthouse

The Judicial Branch's Interpreter and Translator Services Unit exists, in its own words, to provide, at no cost, certified and highly qualified interpreting and translation to people with limited English proficiency in all court and court-related matters. Its FAQs answer "Do I need to pay?" with "No", say that court personnel submit the written request once a need is identified, and rule out relatives and friends as interpreters because they are not neutral. The Branch gives its own oral certification exams in Spanish, Portuguese and Polish.

What the Branch does not cover is the case outside court: depositions in downtown Hartford law offices, witness interviews, client meetings, and the signing of a lease or a closing. Those are booked by the attorneys or the parties. A three-hour deposition in person is $330, plus $0.70 a mile of travel: a 30-mile round trip adds $21, for $351. The same three hours by video is $240. See interpreters for depositions and interpreters for real estate closings.

Hartford's immigration court sits in the Ribicoff Federal Building on Main Street

EOIR lists the Hartford Immigration Court in the A.A. Ribicoff Federal Building & Courthouse, 450 Main Street, Suite 628, open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Its administrative control list also assigns the Hartford DHS sub-office and Connecticut Department of Corrections facilities to it. The court arranges the interpreter for its hearings.

Attorneys book us for what comes before a hearing: settling which language the respondent and each witness actually speak, preparing witnesses to testify through the court's interpreter, and reading declarations back. Many of those sessions can run by video at $80 an hour with no travel. See interpreters for immigration court hearings.

More than a third of Hartford residents speak Spanish at home

The Census counts 40,506 Hartford residents age 5 and over who speak Spanish at home, out of 114,893. No other group in the table passes 3,100, and several of the counts are small enough that their margins of error are wide. Hartford Public Schools describes its own families as speaking nearly 90 languages, from nearly 70 towns.

Spanish is at our standard rate, as are Portuguese and Polish, the two other languages the Judicial Branch certifies in. Albanian is a limited-availability language, 25–30% over the base. For any language other than Spanish, ask us before the date whether it can be staffed in person in Hartford or only by video.

How the travel charge works out

Travel is charged at $0.70 per mile from the interpreter's location, which means you can work it out rather than wait for a quote: a 20-mile round trip is $14, a 60-mile round trip is $42, a 150-mile round trip is $105. There is no separate call-out fee on top.

We will not pretend to know in advance where the interpreter will be coming from — that depends on the language, the date and the venue. What we do is confirm the interpreter and the exact travel figure before you book, so it is never a surprise on the invoice. Virtual assignments carry no travel charge at all, which is one reason most of what we do is virtual.

By video, by phone or in person

Virtual interpreting runs on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, or over the telephone. It is quicker to arrange, costs less and carries no travel charge, and it suits appointments, calls and most meetings.

In person is what venues with their own rules tend to expect, and the right choice when documents are being signed or several people are speaking at once. Tell us the platform, or the city and the venue, when you send the request.
