Biometric since July 2008
Turkmenistan's foreign-travel passport has been biometric since July 2008, the first in former Soviet Central Asia to meet ICAO standards. It is issued by the State Migration Service, printed in Turkmen and English, and was redesigned in 2013 and again in October 2023. The older non-biometric passports stopped being valid on 10 July 2013.
The data page is already partly in English, but the stamps, endorsements and Turkmen-only pages are not. If you submit those pages, they are translated. A pre-2008 Soviet-format passport shows no expiry date and has pages reserved for new photos at 25 and 45; that is the format, not a fault.
Renewing from abroad
Extensions of passports held abroad ended on 31 December 2024, and a new biometric passport is applied for in person in Turkmenistan. Files therefore often hold an expired passport alongside consular letters, and both may need translating.
The Latin spelling on the data page is the one we follow. Turkmen writes the Russian endings -ov and -ev as -ow and -ew, so older Russian-language documents spell the same surname differently. See our Turkmen identity card page, our Turkmen page and our Russian page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My passport is partly in English. Does it need translating?
The English parts do not, but the Turkmen-only stamps and endorsements do if you submit those pages.
My old passport has no expiry date.
Pre-2008 Soviet-format passports were issued that way. We translate what is printed.
My surname ends in -ow here and -ov elsewhere.
Turkmen Latin spelling writes the Russian -ov as -ow. We follow the passport and note the variant.
