Issued by RITA, or by Zanzibar's own registry
On the mainland, births are registered under the Births and Deaths Registration Act and certificates are issued by RITA, the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency. Since the under-five registration programme, a child can be registered at a health facility or the ward office, with the fee waived and the first copy free. Zanzibar has a separate registry, the Zanzibar Civil Status Registration Agency (ZCSRA), under its own 2006 law.
RITA issues a certificate only through the office where the birth was first registered, and a late registration goes through Form B3. A Tanzanian born abroad cannot get a mainland birth certificate at all, because the law does not allow births abroad to be registered there; that person relies on the foreign certificate.
Old, laminated or handwritten copies
Many families hold an older certificate filled in by hand, often laminated. Embassies in Dar es Salaam tell applicants to get a fresh RITA certificate if theirs predates 1990, is hard to read or is laminated, because only a typewritten, unlaminated copy can be legalised. USCIS does not ask for legalisation, but a clean copy is easier to read and to translate.
Depending on its age the certificate may be in English, Swahili or both. A certificate wholly in English needs no translation; any Swahili entry, stamp or note does. See our Swahili page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Does it need an apostille?
No apostille is possible: Tanzania is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents are legalised through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. USCIS requires neither — see apostille and translation.
My certificate is from Zanzibar.
Then it comes from ZCSRA, not RITA. We translate it the same way and keep the issuing office's name as printed.
The certificate is all in English. Do I need you?
No. An English certificate goes in as it is. Only Swahili entries or stamps need translating.
