Somali was given an official Latin orthography in 1972 and a mass literacy campaign followed, so written Somali is younger than many of its speakers and literacy varies sharply by generation and by schooling.
A person fluent in spoken Somali may read it imperfectly. That is a fact about the language's history rather than about the individual, and it matters when a written document is put in front of them.
The letters c and x, and Arabic
Somali orthography uses c and x for sounds English does not have, so Cabdi and Xasan are correct spellings that appear elsewhere as Abdi and Hassan.
