Notarial or private
A Senegalese power of attorney (procuration) is either drawn up by a notary (acte notarié) or written privately with the signature certified (légalisation de signature). The notarial form names the notary and carries the notary's seal and file number. The private form is shorter, and the certification stamp is translated like the rest. See our French page.
For land, the private form is often not enough: a sale has to go through a notary. If the power is for a land or house transaction, check what the notary handling it will accept; see the property deed page.
Using it in the US, or sending one to Senegal
A Senegalese power used in the US, for example to let a relative act on your behalf with a bank or a court, is translated in full: the parties, every power granted and its limits, the date and any expiry. Senegal has issued apostilles since March 2023, so a court that wants one can get it.
If you are in the US and signing a power for use in Senegal, the US side can apostille the signed document, since both countries are parties to the Convention. Ask the Senegalese notary or office what they need before you sign. See also our power of attorney translation page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My procuration has a certified signature but no notary.
That is a private power of attorney. We translate it, stamp included; ask the office if it is enough.
Can I sell land in Senegal through a power of attorney?
Land sales go through a notary. Ask the notary what form of power they accept.
Does the US accept a Senegalese apostille?
Both countries are Apostille Convention parties. USCIS does not need one; a court might.
