Acknowledgment before the civil registrar

A father who is not married to the mother establishes paternity by acknowledging the child (reconnaissance) before the civil registrar, when the birth is declared or later in a separate act noted on the birth record. The acknowledgment names the father, the child and the record it refers to, with the registrar's seal. We translate it with the record number exactly as written. See our French page.

This matters more in Senegal than in many countries, because Article 196 of the Family Code bars a child born outside marriage from establishing paternity in court unless the father acknowledged the child voluntarily. Reform has been debated for years, but we have found no change enacted. The acknowledgment is often the only legal proof of paternity there is.

Where it shows up

The acknowledgment, or its note on the birth certificate, is what a US office looks at when a father petitions for a child born outside marriage. On the ECOWAS identity card, the father's name is stored only in the chip, and an asterisk replaces it for a child who was not acknowledged.

If the parents later married, see the marriage certificate page. If a DNA test was done abroad for a US case, it is a separate document, usually already in English. What the US agency accepts as proof is its decision; ask the office.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

The father acknowledged the child years after the birth.

That is allowed. The acknowledgment is noted on the birth record, and we translate both.

Can paternity be proved in a Senegalese court?

Article 196 of the Family Code restricts it to children presumed born of a marriage or voluntarily acknowledged. Ask a lawyer about your case.

Is the acknowledgment on the birth extract enough?

Ask the receiving office. We translate the extract, the separate act, or both.
