In Essex County, Portuguese, Haitian Creole and West African languages follow Spanish
Of 827,641 Essex County residents aged five and over, 501,739 speak only English at home and 325,902 speak another language, according to the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate (ACS B16001). Spanish accounts for 179,803 of them. Portuguese is next at 25,897, then Haitian Creole (23,605) and the Census group for Yoruba, Twi, Igbo and other languages of Western Africa (23,082), ahead of French (14,175), Chinese, Hindi, Tagalog, Polish and Italian.
The school district's own list is close to the county's. In its settlement agreement with the United States, the Newark Board of Education defined its Major Languages as Spanish, Portuguese, French and Haitian Creole, plus any language spoken by 100 or more parents (settlement agreement). For us Spanish, Portuguese, French and Haitian Creole are standard-rate: $80 an hour by video, $110 in person. Yoruba, Igbo and Twi carry the limited-availability surcharge of 25–30%: $137.50 to $143 an hour in person, $100 to $104 by video; the Census group is wide, so tell us the language. For Chinese, tell us whether the person speaks Mandarin or Cantonese.
Newark and Elizabeth each have an immigration court, and Newark's shares its address with USCIS
EOIR runs two courts in this part of New Jersey: Newark, at 970 Broad Street, Room 1200, where the public enters through the security doors on Court Street, and Elizabeth, at 625 Evans Street, Room 148A. At both, the court provides the interpreter for the hearing at government expense, using staff, contract or telephone interpreters, and the request should be made no later than 30 days before (ICPM 3.10). Do not hire one for the hearing itself. The USCIS locator lists the Newark Field Office at the same address, the Peter Rodino Federal Building at 970 Broad Street (USCIS); for a green card interview the applicant brings the interpreter.
What Newark immigration attorneys book us for is the work around the hearing: confirming the language and dialect a client and each witness speak, so the request to the court is right; preparing testimony; reading declarations back for the certificate of interpretation. Newark Public Schools is a separate case. The district tells parents they have the right to receive information and communicate with school or Board staff in their language and to ask their principal or parent liaison to call (973) 733-7333 (Newark Public Schools); its settlement agreement also bars using students, family or friends of limited-English parents, or Google Translate, as interpreters outside emergencies, and refers to the district's telephone-based interpretation vendor. The agreement states that it runs through December 31, 2024; we did not check whether it was extended, so ask the school before hiring an interpreter for a school meeting.
What an interpreted appointment in Newark costs
A two-hour green card interview at 970 Broad Street is $220 in person; with a 20-mile round trip from the interpreter's location at $0.70 a mile, $234. A two-hour in-person meeting in Igbo is $275 to $286. We quote within minutes, four business hours at most, and confirm the travel figure before you pay.

Where interpreters are needed in Newark, and who provides them
Some of these places must provide the interpreter themselves, and then you should not be paying for one. Where that is so, the official page is linked.
| Place | Who provides the interpreter |
|---|---|
| Newark Immigration Court, 970 Broad Street, Room 1200 (public entrance on Court Street) | The court provides the interpreter for the hearing, at government expense (ICPM 3.10). Attorneys book their own for client preparation and witness meetings. |
| Elizabeth Immigration Court, 625 Evans Street, Room 148A, Elizabeth | Same rule: the court provides the hearing interpreter. Preparation, declarations and witness meetings are the attorney's to arrange. |
| USCIS Newark Field Office, Peter Rodino Federal Building, 970 Broad Street | USCIS does not supply one for a green card interview: an applicant who needs an interpreter brings one, who shows a government-issued ID, takes an oath and interprets word for word. |
| Newark Public Schools (Newark Board of Education) | Parents have the right to communicate with school or Board staff in their language; the Board's number is (973) 733-7333. The district's settlement with the United States required qualified interpreters, not students, family or Google Translate, outside emergencies. |
| University Hospital, Newark | Free language assistance for patients whose primary language is not English; patients contact the hospital directly and it connects the interpreter. |

What an interpreter costs, worked out
These are the published rates multiplied out: $80 an hour by video or phone, $110 an hour in person, $0.70 a mile of travel.
| Booking | How it is worked out | Total |
|---|---|---|
| One-hour video or phone call | 1 hour × $80 | $80 |
| Two-hour video interview | 2 hours × $80 | $160 |
| Two-hour meeting in person, 20-mile round trip | 2 hours × $110 + 20 miles × $0.70 | $234 |
| Three-hour deposition or closing in person, 40-mile round trip | 3 hours × $110 + 40 miles × $0.70 | $358 |
| Full day in person (six hours), two interpreters in relay | 2 interpreters × 6 hours × $110 | $1,320 plus travel |
The quote confirms the interpreter, the exact travel figure and the total before you book; nothing is charged until you confirm.
How the travel charge works out
Travel is charged at $0.70 per mile from the interpreter's location, which means you can work it out rather than wait for a quote: a 20-mile round trip is $14, a 60-mile round trip is $42, a 150-mile round trip is $105. There is no separate call-out fee on top.
We will not pretend to know in advance where the interpreter will be coming from — that depends on the language, the date and the venue. What we do is confirm the interpreter and the exact travel figure before you book, so it is never a surprise on the invoice. Virtual assignments carry no travel charge at all, which is one reason most of what we do is virtual.
By video, by phone or in person
Virtual interpreting runs on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, or over the telephone. It is quicker to arrange, costs less and carries no travel charge, and it suits appointments, calls and most meetings.
In person is what venues with their own rules tend to expect, and the right choice when documents are being signed or several people are speaking at once. Tell us the platform, or the city and the venue, when you send the request.
How booking an interpreter works
- You send the request with the form below: the language, the setting, the format, the date and how long it should last.
- We confirm before you commit: the interpreter, the exact price and the travel figure if there is one. We reply within minutes, four business hours at most, and no payment is taken at this stage.
- You confirm and pay, and the interpreter is booked for your date. The interpreter's name and credentials are sent to you once the booking is paid.
What to have ready
The more of this comes in the first message, the fewer exchanges before you have a price:
- The language, the date, the start time and how long it should run.
- Virtual or in person: the platform, or the city and the venue.
- The setting and the subject matter.
- How many people need interpreting for.
- Any credential the venue requires of the interpreter. We confirm before you book whether we can staff it; the interpreter's name and credentials follow once the booking is paid.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Newark immigration court provide an interpreter?
Yes, for the hearing, at government expense, at both the Newark court on Broad Street and the Elizabeth court (ICPM 3.10). Request it no later than 30 days before. Preparation with your attorney is not covered.
Where is the USCIS office in Newark, and do I bring an interpreter?
The Newark Field Office is in the Peter Rodino Federal Building at 970 Broad Street (USCIS). For a green card interview you bring the interpreter, who shows ID and takes an oath (USCIS Policy Manual).
Do Newark public schools provide interpreters for parents?
The district says parents have the right to receive information and communicate with school or Board of Education staff in their language; ask the principal or parent liaison to call (973) 733-7333 (Newark Public Schools).
How much is a Portuguese interpreter in Newark?
Portuguese is a standard-rate language: $80 an hour by video with a one-hour minimum, or $110 an hour in person with a two-hour minimum, plus $0.70 per mile of travel.
Is the price per person or per interpreter?
Per interpreter, per hour, billed from the scheduled start time. One interpreter covers a meeting; a full-day hearing may need two working in relay.
What if the venue provides its own interpreter?
Then you should not be paying us. Immigration court provides one, and hospitals and school districts frequently must. Ask them first.
Can I see the interpreter's credentials before I pay?
Tell us the credential the venue or the other side requires when you request, and we confirm before you book whether we can staff it. The interpreter's name and credentials are sent once the booking is paid.
How is travel charged?
$0.70 per mile from the interpreter's location — a 20-mile round trip is $14. We confirm the exact figure before you book, and virtual assignments carry none.
