Family law in Mexico is state law, so separation exists in some states and not others and the procedure differs. Several states, Mexico City among them, moved to divorcio incausado — divorce on the unilateral request of either spouse without grounds — which has largely displaced separation where it is available.

Separación de cuerpos, and the administrative divorce
Where separación de cuerpos exists it suspends cohabitation and leaves the marriage in place. Distinct from it is the divorcio administrativo before a Registro Civil officer, available where both spouses agree, are of age, have no minor children and no community property — a divorce granted by a registrar rather than a judge.
An administrative divorce decree looks nothing like a court judgment and is fully effective. A reader expecting a judicial decree may question it, and the translation names the officer and the registry.

Whatever the route, the effect is recorded as an anotación marginal on the acta de matrimonio held by the state Registro Civil, and a copia certificada issued afterwards carries it.

Mexican states recognise concubinato and, in several, a registered sociedad de convivencia. Neither is a marriage, and terminating one is not a separation or a divorce.
