A change of name is its own registration

In Kyrgyzstan a change of surname, given name or patronymic is one of the five events the civil registry registers, alongside birth, marriage, divorce and death. It produces a certificate of change of name, and the registry amends the person's other civil records to match.

So a birth certificate issued after the change may show the new name, while documents issued before show the old one, and the name change certificate is what connects them in a US file. Since December 2025 it also exists digitally in Tunduk, valid inside the country; order the paper form for use abroad. See our Kyrgyz birth certificate page.

From Asanbekov to Asanbek uulu

The most common change is from a Russian-style surname ending in -ov or -ova to a traditional form. Amendments to the Family Code and the civil status law signed in July 2025 widened the forms allowed: the father's name with uulu or kyzy, the grandfather's name with or without tegin, or an ancestor's name up to the seventh generation where documents prove the line.

The translation gives the old and the new name exactly as printed, in one consistent Latin spelling, and we can add a note explaining uulu, kyzy and tegin. See our Kyrgyz page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Only the ending of my surname changed. Do I need this?

Usually yes. To a US officer Asanbekov and Asanbek uulu are different names, and the certificate is what shows they are the same person.

Does the change carry over to US records?

No. Each US agency updates its own records on its own rules. The translated certificate is the evidence you give them.

The certificate is in Russian.

Normal. We translate it, keeping both the old and the new name exactly as printed.
