Ley 17.344, once in a lifetime
Chile permits a change of name once under Ley 17.344, on defined grounds — a name that is ridiculous or causes moral harm, or a name by which the person has been known for at least five years. The route is judicial.
The statute is named on the resulting order, and the translation keeps the citation because it tells the reader which ground was relied on.
Subinscripción at the margin
The Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación records the change as a subinscripción at the margin of the birth inscription. A certificate issued afterwards carries it, and Chilean certificates state explicitly at the foot whether subinscripciones exist.
That footer line is worth translating carefully: a certificate reading that there are no subinscripciones is positive evidence of the absence of any annotation, which is sometimes exactly what an office wants to see.
The RUN, and the RUT
The RUN — the national identity number — stays with the person across a change of name, and for individuals it is the same number as the RUT used for tax. One number, two names for it, and foreign readers regularly look for two.
It is written with a check digit after a hyphen, which may be the letter K, and we reproduce it exactly including that character.
Ley 21.120, and the administrative route
Chile's 2018 gender identity law created an administrative route before the Registro Civil for adults to change registered name and sex, separate from the Ley 17.344 procedure and not counting against its once-only limit.
