Changing a name takes a court
Article 64 of the Congolese Family Code forbids changing a name in whole or in part, altering its spelling or changing the order of its elements, except under the procedure the Code lays down; under Article 66 the judges must make sure the change does not harm third parties. A change is therefore made by a court, and the judgment is the document to translate, along with any registry entry made under it.
We translate the judgment in full: the petitioner's old and new names, the reasons, the court's order and the instruction to the civil registrar. A change for a child is decided by the tribunal pour enfants.
Authenticité names and postnoms
From 1972, under Mobutu's authenticité policy, Christian first names were dropped for Congolese names and the postnom became standard. Many older Congolese therefore appear under a baptismal name on church records and an authentic name on civil ones, and families later took back French first names. These differences are not formal name changes.
We reproduce each document's names exactly and can add a note on the history, which helps an adjudicator who sees two names for one person. See the Congolese birth certificate page and our French page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My father's documents show two different names.
Common for people born before or around 1972. We translate each as written and can add a note on the authenticité name policy.
Is my postnom a middle name?
No, it is part of the Congolese name. We keep it in place and explain it in a note.
Do I need a court judgment for my new name?
Under the Family Code, a name is changed through the procedure it sets out. Ask a Congolese lawyer or the receiving office which document they need.
